Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Undersheriff, this position is responsible for supervising and assuring the successful operations of a Division upon assignment from the Sheriff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assuring services to the citizens of the County, coordinating, evaluating and assessing work done by lower-classified employees. Position may assume the duties and functions of the Undersheriff during his/her absence.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

• Acts as a Role Model for County values and understands the role of Clear Creek County in providing service to its citizens and visitors.

• Provides services to the community and citizens and is aware of their needs. Coordinates Office activities to provide community services in the areas of Patrol services, crime prevention, preservation of the peace, protection of persons and property, emergency communications, and enforcement of the laws and ordinances of the County and State of Colorado.

• Relates to diverse groups and individuals professionally and builds ongoing trust with others. Fosters informal contacts/relationships to further the Sheriff’s Office mission. Demonstrates knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations as they pertain to the specific duties of this position. Represents the Sheriff’s Office in a positive and professional manner

Provides analysis information in staff work, critical information promptly and identifies the tone and meaning of what others are trying to say. • Demonstrates knowledge of the policies, procedures, methods, and activities of the Sheriff’s Office as they pertain to the responsibilities of the Division Commander

• Utilizes thorough knowledge of the methods of criminal investigation and the processes involved

• Applies knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws that apply to specified division assignment

• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all areas of law enforcement techniques, criminal behavior, legal rights, and other pertinent matters of law enforcement

• Utilizes skill in the proper use of firearms

• Displays knowledge of the principles of organization, management, planning, development, and implementation of responsibilities as they relate to the activities of the position

• Keeps abreast of any changes in policy, methods, regulations, standards, equipment/supply needs, etc.

• Admits when the answer is not known and asks for help when needed

• Respects the confidentiality of information or concerns of others

• Stands up for their own point of view in a positive manner and experiments and is willing to try new solutions to problems

• Uses independent judgment and discretion in supervising subordinates, handling emergencies, determining and formulating procedures, resolving problems, and advising appropriate staff in regard to Public Safety and related matters

• Responsible for intergovernmental relations including departmental operations with other agencies having mutual interests and responsibility in activities within the County

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION

• An undergraduate degree in Management, Public Administration, Administration of Justice, or a related field is desirable.

• Five years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience at the rank of Sergeant or its equivalent or any equivalent combination of education and law enforcement/management experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are also desirable.

• Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.

• P.O.S.T. certification is required for select divisions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Requires knowledge and ability to independently accomplish vastly complex tasks or projects consistently and accurately and in various situations.

• An essential aspect of this level is the ability to provide strong leadership, insight, and consultation on highly intricate matters.

• Must have mastery-level skills in the related duties.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Colorado Motor Vehicle Driver’s License – without restriction or revocation

• Must pass a background check: Criminal and Traffic

• Conviction of a crime will not be an absolute bar to employment

• Paramedic must be without restriction

• Must not be excluded from participation in Medicare and state health care programs as provided in the US Social Security Act, 42 USCA § 1320a-7, or as otherwise provided by law, at the time of hire and at all times thereafter

• Required legal authorization to work -

  • United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States

SUPERVISORY:

May instruct, delegate and review the work of lower classified employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be in good physical condition. Must possess adequate physical strength to subdue and control an unruly and resisting subject and to drag an unconscious subject a distance of fifty feet. Must be able to climb and descend stairs quickly and repeatedly throughout a work shift and stand, sit, kneel, bend, or stoop for prolonged periods. Work is performed in circumstances involving hazards such as assault by inmates, biohazards transmitted by inmates, and the possibility of fires and disturbances that may be threatening to life or cause bodily harm. Extremely stressful environment during peak activity periods demanding full attention and coordination of numerous tasks simultaneously.

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION

This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to “biohazards” associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Members are advised that exposure to a “biohazard” may result in severe illness or death. Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing. Vaccination may be required to prevent or treat exposures to “biohazards.” The County provides inoculation of HAV, HBV (Testing for TB), Chickenpox, Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis), Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella), and Influenza. Some vaccinations are only required once in a lifetime, and you may be required to show documentation of the vaccine. Employees who decline to be vaccinated will need to sign a Declination.
